Smarter Card Tips 3 of 5

Do Smarter Cards Make for a Safer Environment?

The short answer is no but, in access control circles, the latest trend is a push toward encrypted smart cards. While the encryption does create a more secure credential, it doesn't protect you much more than a traditional smart card.

In this third section of our five-part series, we are encouraging customers to think again as we share with you some classic ways predators can invade your space even if you were to have an encrypted card system.

Example 3 of 5: Loss or Theft of Credentials

A card is only as secure as the hands that it’s in. If one of your team members loses or misplaces their ID badge (even if it is an encrypted smart card) the finder now has access to your assets.

You can mitigate the impact of lost or stolen smart cards by having a policy in place for team members to report an incidental loss.

Solution:

Everyone is human at the end of the day and anyone can make a mistake but with the correct system in place, your team will be encouraged to report a lost card so that card can't be used to harm their teammates or their company.
