Smarter Card Tips 4 of 5

Do Smarter Cards Make for a Safer Environment?

In the fourth part of this five-part series, we will be examining tailgating as a potential threat that can leave your organization vulnerable, no matter the encryption level of your smart cards.

Example 4 of 5: Tailgating

One of the most significant weaknesses of most access control systems isn't the systems themselves but the people who use them. For instance, one of your team members is walking into the office, and a stranger is following closely behind them. Not knowing if this person is a customer, prospect, or potential vendor, the teammate holds the door, bypassing your initial security system.

Solution:

Holding the door can feel like the right thing to do in this situation, but your team members should be trained to act accordingly when they do so.

Train your team to greet the individual and ask questions like, "Do you have an appointment?" or "May I ask who you are here to see?". If they can answer either of those, the team member should request they wait outside the secured area while the team member finds the person whom they seek to meet.
